UNDERSTANDING YOUR SKIN

UNDERSTANDING YOUR SKIN

A recent Society of Dermatology Skincare Specialists (SDSS) study shows that 88% of women don't know the right products for their skin. And the worst part? Despite all the new skincare products and trends being available in the market, women remain unsatisfied with their skin. Know why? Because the only "skincare essential" is knowing what your skin needs and giving it exactly that.

Every person’s skin is unique, but there are a few common skin types that may help you to identify where you skin fits in the most. There are five different kinds of skin type—, normal, combination, dry, oily and sensitive. Most people will find that their skin types change over time. For example, people who are going through puberty are more likely to have oily skin, while older individuals are more likely to have dry skin. Keep in mind that within these five skin types, there is a ton of variety. Plus, sensitive skin can be in combination with any of the skin types. Your skin might be dry, but not dry enough to actually be flaky or rough.

Here are two easy ways to determine your skin type at home:

The Bare-Faced Method

Cleanse your face thoroughly with a mild cleanser and gently pat dry. Leave skin bare (and do not apply any additional moisturizers, serums or treatments). After 30 minutes, examine your cheeks, chin, nose and forehead for any shine. After another 30 minutes, evaluate whether your skin feels parched, especially if you smile or make any other facial expressions. If your skin feels tight, your skin is likely dry. If there is noticeable shine on your nose and forehead, your skin is mostly likely normal/combination. If there is shine on your cheeks in addition to your forehead and nose, you most likely have oily skin.

The Blotting Sheet Method

This method is much faster and often an excellent differentiator between oily and dry skin types. Gently pat a blotting paper on the different areas of your face. Hold the sheet up to the light to determine how much oil is visible. If the sheet picked up little to no oil, you most likely have dry skin. If the blotting sheet reveals oil from the forehead and nose areas, your skin is normal/combination. Finally, if the blotting paper is saturated with oil, it is extremely likely that you have oily skin.

  1. Don't smoke.
  2. Stay hydrated.
  3. Wash your skin gently but thoroughly every day and never wear makeup to bed.
  4. Moisturize.

COMBINATION SKIN

Combination skin dry or normal in some places, but might be oily around the T-zone. This is a common skin type, and people with combination skin may have blackheads or large pores around the area of the T-zone.

  • Pores that look larger than normal, because they’re more open
  • Blackheads
  • Shiny skin

People with dry skin often feel that their complexion is rather dull and rough, and it is very important for them to use moisturizer to avoid it becoming cracked and inflamed.

DRY SKIN

If the dryness is not treated, skin may develop:

  • a rough and blotchy appearance (sometimes it appears to be prematurely aged)
  • a feeling of tightness
  • possible itchiness

It is also more sensitive to irritation, redness and the risk of infection.

EXTREMELY DRY SKIN

Certain areas of the body – particularly hands, feet, elbows and knees – are prone to:

  • roughness
  • chapping with a tendency to form rhagades (cracks)
  • calluses
  • scaling
  • frequent itchiness

Extremely dry skin is most commonly found on the elderly or on severely dehydrated hands.

Oily skin is the exact opposite of dry skin and is more likely to be too shiny. People with oily skin tend to struggle more with blemishes and be more prone to acne.

Their skin can become red or itchy if they use scented lotions or moisturizers. People with sensitive skin often benefit from using essential oils and natural treatments instead of standard commercial products.

  • Redness
  • Itching
  • Burning
  • Dryness

Do Ayurvedic treatments have side effects?

Not necessarily. But they can cause allergies in those who have sensitive skin. It is best to do a patch test before applying to greater surface.
